New Jersey Bringing on More Clean Energy to Lower Bills

Board of Public Utilities Expands Affordable, Clean Energy Resources in the State

TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) concluded its competitive bidding process today, awarding contracts for 355 megawatts of grid-scale battery storage and 24 megawatts of grid-scale solar to project developers. This represents the first ever grid-scale storage award in New Jersey’s history.

The following statement is from Eric Miller, New Jersey policy director at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council):

“BPU’s actions are a critical step to getting more clean energy generation online as fast as possible. The state needs all the megawatts of solar and storage it can get to provide clean, reliable, in-state power. The BPU opened new solicitations for even more battery storage, solar, and community solar that will lower energy costs for everyone, especially community solar participants.

“Collectively, these actions meet Governor Sherrill's directive in Executive Order 2 to rapidly increase the amount of solar and storage in the state – the quickest resources to deploy to meet rising energy demand in the PJM region. New Jersey must continue to invest in in-state generation to support the state's ambitious climate and clean energy goals and grow good-paying union jobs.”
