NRDC Digital Tool Tracks Political Opposition to Offshore Drilling
WASHINGTON – NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) is launching an updated digital tool today to help people track where their Members of Congress stand on offshore oil and gas drilling. The Biden administration is expected to release a final five-year plan for federal offshore oil and gas leasing by late September.
The following is a statement from Alexandra Adams, managing director of government affairs for the NRDC:
“Congress has a key role in making decisions about the future of our energy sources and the health of our oceans. If our elected officials are serious about protecting communities and local economies, and addressing climate change, they are going to have to join together and take a stand against any new offshore oil and gas drilling.
“More leasing means more pollution in our air and water, the ever-present risk of oil spills, harm to our climate and deepening the country’s dependence on fossil fuels for decades to come.
“Everyone needs to hold public officials accountable, and using this tool, citizens can see where leaders in their state stand on this pressing issue. It’s not enough to oppose oil and gas drilling off of your own state. Oil spills and climate harms cross state lines. Opposition must, too.”
