NRDC Supports the Pathways Initiative and Cap & Invest Reauthorization
SACRAMENTO, CA – As the end of California’s legislative session looms near, NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council) supports reauthorization of California’s Cap-and-Invest program and passage of a workable Senate Bill 540, by Senators Josh Becker and Henry Stern, which would enable California utilities to participate in a regional electricity market that connects the state with the broader West.
Following is a statement from Victoria Rome, director of California government affairs at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council):
“California’s legislature must act now to reauthorize a strong cap-and-invest program. This is a necessary policy tool for California to meet its 2045 climate targets and help fund the state’s transition off of polluting fuels. A strong cap-and-invest program will reduce emissions and continue California’s world-leading climate programs.
“A workable version of SB 540 must also pass this year. California is a leading force in the clean energy transition, but it can’t do it alone. The Golden State must collaborate with other states in the region to lower electricity costs for consumers and businesses, increase reliability of the grid, and further our clean energy goals.”
