Trump's Coal Bailout Fails Bigly

The U.S. Department of the Interior cancels Wyoming coal lease sale after embarrassing Montana auction.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Bureau of Land Management postponed a planned sale of 3,508 acres of federal coal reserves in Wyoming, a day after a Montana auction attracted a single rejected bid of $186,000 for an estimated 167.5 million tons—equating to less than one-tenth of 1 cent per ton.

Following is a reaction from Bobby McEnaney, director of land conservation at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council):

“When a ton of your product sells for less than a gumball in the 1950s, that’s not a conspiracy—it’s basic economics. This coal is literally cheaper than dirt. Utilities are moving away from coal because it’s costly, dirty, and risky. The Trump administration's attempt to revive to energy source of the last century is a complete failure.”
