Editorial Boards Weigh In: Paterson Should Sign Moratorium Into Law

The New York Times and the Albany Times Union today both called on New York State Governor Paterson to quickly sign into law a measure just sent to his desk from the state legislature that would impose a six-month moratorium on the issuance of any new permits for controversial hydraulic fracturing - or "fracking" in the Marcellus Shale to give the state time to first properly analyze the risks and determine what safeguards must be imposed.

The Times Union sagely observed:

"Delaying drilling in the Marcellus Shale, albeit to the indignation of an energy industry eager to profit from it, gives New York a chance to be a leader once more in environmental policy. No state has ever imposed such a ban, even temporarily."

Lend your voice to those of thousands of New Yorkers, as well as those of others across the country who have been impacted by inadequately regulated fracking.  Tell the governor to quickly sign the moratorium legislation into law and make New York the unequivocal model of how a state can tell the big gas companies that we won't allow them to put our communities at risk.  Say no to new fracking unless they can show us it's safe.
