For nearly 30 years, Los Angeles elementary schools have participated in Kids Ocean Day which usually culminates with thousands of LA-area schoolchildren leading a beach-cleanup and aerial art event at Dockweiler State Beach in Playa Vista, California. Given the ongoing pandemic, the event shifted online for a month-long event concluding on World Oceans Day. The theme, however, remained the same: motivating the students of Los Angeles to be good stewards of the environment.
Kids Ocean Day is sponsored by the Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education and the City of Los Angeles Board of Public Works. The program teaches kids about how neighborhood litter flows to the ocean, ultimately endangering or killing marine life. The goal is to educate kids about the adverse effects of pollution on our oceans and wildlife and focuses on what kids can do to take care of the beach, the ocean, and marine mammals.
This year, in lieu of a beach-cleanup and aerial art formation, students can participate in the 2021 Kids Ocean Day Art Contest by submitting an original artwork illustrating what they love about the ocean.
Every art entry received will be included as an individual image in a giant online mosaic. The mosaic will be unveiled on the Kids Ocean Day website on June 8, 2021—World Oceans Day. (Check out an example on Photo Mosaics.)

Kids can send an impactful message through their ocean-themed artwork: protect the ocean.
Preserving our oceans is certainly a lofty goal. But now, more than ever before, our oceans need our help.
