California's New Oil and Gas Exploration Safeguards

SACRAMENTO – The State of California just announced new safeguards against oil and gas exploration, including a moratorium on cyclic steaming.

The following is a statement from Ann Alexander, a senior attorney at Natural Resources Defense Council:

"Governor Newsom has taken a bold step to meaningfully assist California communities besieged by the impacts of oil drilling, and put health and the environment over the interests of industry.  Cyclic steaming, in particular, is a source of carbon pollution and years of uncontrolled spills, and the governor is rightly putting the brakes on it.  The Natural Resources Agency is appropriately considering curbs on other polluting and dangerous practices such as fracking, and contemplating setbacks from oil wells so that communities will not have to deal with drilling practically on top of their homes and schools."
