EcoWatch, an online news service in partnership with the Waterkeeper Alliance, has posted an online petition asking the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to issue strong rules for fracking under federal oil and gas leases, including leasing on both public and private land.
The BLM’s draft rule on fracking is a start and long overdue, but as long as fracking is occurring on public, Indian or split estate lands, the oil and gas industry should be held to the highest standards. The BLM’s rules should be a model for the nation that protects communities and the environment, but the draft rules issued by the agency don't accomplish that, so we hope you will join others in asking for stronger regulations. As we've outlined in previous blog posts, the BLM needs to go farther to protect clean air, drinking water sources, wildlife, and nearby communities from the risks of fracking.
