Tell the Obama Administration to Permanently Protect the New England Coral Canyons and Seamounts and Cashes Ledge
As I wrote last week, the Obama Administration and NOAA are considering permanently protecting part of the spectacular New England Coral Canyons and Seamounts area through its designation as the first-ever monument in the Atlantic Ocean and first in waters anywhere off the continental United States. The public has until September 15th, next Tuesday, to weigh in to urge the federal government to take this historic step and to include all five canyons in the Coral Canyons and Seamounts area, not just three, as well as the Cashes Ledge area in the national monument. The two areas are home to ancient and vibrant deep sea coral gardens, the largest and deepest coldwater kelp forest on the Atlantic Seaboard, and a rich array of marine mammals, seabirds, sea turtles, and fish.
