Rob Bonta Nominated as California’s Next Attorney General

Assemblymember Bonta has helped carry the fight for environmental justice and climate equity in Sacramento and has been a solid vote on legislation to fight climate change.

NRDC congratulates Assemblymember Rob Bonta on his nomination as California’s next Attorney General, following the confirmation of Xavier Becerra as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services. Pending likely confirmation by the California legislature, Bonta will quickly step into this new role.

Assemblymember Bonta has helped carry the fight for environmental justice and climate equity in Sacramento and has been a solid vote on legislation to fight climate change. He co-authored a bill to create a California Green New Deal and has been a leader in the movement to decarbonize California industry. Bonta also authored legislation that banned for-profit prisons and immigration detention centers in California.

Former Attorney General Becerra set a very high bar for his successors. He successfully fought the Trump Administration on its horrific environmental and social justice policies and helped defend our climate laws against industry attack. He set up the first environmental justice unit in the Attorney General’s office. Assemblymember Bonta’s experience and values tell us that he will continue Attorney General Becerra’s legacy as we advance the fight for climate and environmental justice in California and throughout the United States. We have worked well with him in the Assembly and look forward to a close relationship in his critical role as Attorney General.
