A marine scientist, Speer oversees NRDC’s multifaceted effort to preserve and protect the world’s oceans, focusing specifically on the management and conservation of biodiversity, fisheries, and the ecosystems of the high seas and the Arctic. From 2001 to 2007, she sat on the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology, and has also served on NAS committees on the Arctic and marine-environment monitoring. In addition, she has accompanied a number of official U.S. delegations to international high-seas fisheries’ negotiations and has testified before Congress and the United Nations on a variety of high-seas and Arctic-management issues. Speer holds a bachelor’s from Mount Holyoke College and a master’s from Yale University. She is based in New York City.
