WASHINGTON (January 12, 2004) -- Dr. Karen Wayland has been named legislative director at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council). For the past year Dr. Wayland, who holds a dual Ph.D. in geology and resource development, previously served as NRDC's deputy legislative director. She takes over the top legislative spot after playing a key role in NRDC's congressional efforts, including the fight against the White House-endorsed energy bill in Congress last year.
Dr. Wayland came to NRDC from Capitol Hill, where she served as legislative fellow for Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV), working on nuclear waste, water, energy and Native American issues. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Connecticut, and her doctorate from Michigan State University.
"Karen has been an asset to our legislative team over the past year. We're lucky to have such a bright, Hill-savvy, battle-tested veteran leading our continued efforts to safeguard America's environment and public health," said Gregory Wetstone, NRDC's advocacy director.
