Statement of David G. Hawkins, Director of Climate Programs at the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) on the Markey Bill to Cut Global Warming Pollution

WASHINGTON (May 28, 2008) – The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) welcomes the announcement by Rep. Edward Markey, Chairman of the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, that he will introduce a bill to cut global warming pollution. 

 

David G. Hawkins, Director of Climate Programs at NRDC made this statement:

 

“Cutting global warming pollution is the most urgent environmental and energy challenge facing this Congress. Chairman Markey's new bill will help move the process ahead. We appreciate Chairman Markey’s hard work on this critical issue and look forward to working with him and the leadership of the House Energy and Commerce Committee as they act to move strong legislation through the Congress.

 

“With significant action to curb global warming pollution, we can transform one of the largest threats facing the world into the largest environmental, energy and economic success story.

 

A study recently released by the U.S. Climate Change Science program explains that we are already seeing the impacts of global warming. We see it in the increased number and severity of wildfires, floods and droughts, and unless we act soon to limit global warming pollution, they will worsen. The solutions are available and affordable; now we need to implement them.”
