Calderon Cancels Controversial Mega-Resort Project Close by National Marine Park
Washington, D.C. / Rio de Janeiro (June 15, 2012) – Today, Mexico's government announced it is completely halting the proposed Cabo Cortes mega-resort near Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park in Baja California after the developer failed to meet key environmental safeguards.
The following is a statement from Amanda Maxwell, Latin America project director at the Natural Resources Defense Council:
“The move by President Calderon to stop an ill-conceived mega development project that would have devastated valuable Mexican coastal resources, including a globally important coral reef, is good news for the marine life, fisheries and local communities that depend on them,” said Amanda Maxwell, Latin America project director at the Natural Resources Defense Council. “Protecting Cabo Pulmo from destructive development choices is exactly the type of action we need to see from world leaders at the Rio+20 Earth Summit, where they are gathering to discuss the future of our oceans and planet.”
