“Strong Opening Steps” on Climate

WASHINGTON — Like our lovely cherry blossoms, ideas for combating climate change are bursting from one end of the Capitol to the other.

The following is a statement by Aliya Haq, director of the federal policy group of the climate and clean energy program at the Natural Resources Defense Council:

‘’Thanks to a new generation of leaders and many dedicated veteran activists, new action is emerging in Congress on how best to deal with the central environmental threat of our time. Today we saw two strong opening steps - - a bill introduced in the House that would ensure America meets its commitment to reduce pollution under the Paris international climate accord, and the creation of a special committee in the Senate to mobilize bold climate action that rises to the scale of the challenge.

``With many bills beginning to flower, and a strong majority of Americans behind us, as well as the countless cities and states already cutting climate pollution, we will succeed. Future generations are counting on us.’’
