Carbon Tax Must Include Limits on Carbon Emissions

WASHINGTON –A new coalition of fossil fuel companies and conservative Republican elders today launched a campaign to push for a carbon tax.

Following is a statement by David Doniger, senior strategic director of the Climate and Clean Energy Program at the Natural Resources Defense Council:

``It’s very encouraging to see major energy companies and Republican Party wisemen and wisewomen promote federal legislation to curb dangerous carbon pollution. While a carbon tax can be an important part of a comprehensive program to cut our carbon footprint and to hold polluters accountable, it must be accompanied by strong limits on carbon emissions, including those under existing authority granted by the Clean Air Act and all other existing legal tools.’’
