North Carolina AG's Lawsuit Against Chemours Gets Bipartisan Support
RALEIGH, N.C. -- North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is suing the chemical manufacturer Chemours in state court to recover damages for decades of PFAS contamination of the water supply. Attorneys General from across the country —and across the political spectrum —are backing the State’s efforts to hold Chemours (formerly DuPont) accountable for decades of water pollution and harm to public health.
A coalition of 10 Republican Attorneys General, including Texas AG Ken Paxton, filed an amicus brief today with the North Carolina Supreme Court supporting AG Jackson’s efforts to hold Chemours accountable. The brief notes that 30 Attorneys General have on-going litigation against PFAS polluters. The North Carolina lawsuit originated with Governor Josh Stein during his tenure as Attorney General.
Following is a statement by Corinne Bell, senior attorney for Environmental Health at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council):
“Chemours has failed to fully address the on-going damage inflicted by decades of PFAS pollution. Despite past legal action, Chemours has not come close to cleaning up its mess and has fallen short of repairing the damages to communities and the state’s natural resources. This amicus brief is a reminder that protecting North Carolinians from toxic cancer-causing chemicals is not a partisan issue – it's a matter of public interest.”
