NRDC Calls for Clean Debt Bill

WASHINGTON (September 25, 2013) – In response to efforts by House Republicans to add anti-environmental riders to legislation raising the debt limit, Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council, released the following statement:

“The House Republican effort to saddle debt limit legislation with anti-environmental riders is an irresponsible and reckless move. They’ve taken our future hostage, and left a ransom note: ‘Go along with our radical agenda, or we’ll undermine the economic stability of the nation.’ This is ideological politics at its worst.

“The President has rightly made clear that he will not negotiate on the debt limit.  Jeopardizing the full faith and credit of the United States with unrelated political gamesmanship is wrong. The debt limit is hardly the place to fight out issues like the Keystone XL pipeline and offshore oil drilling, which are now covered by longstanding, well-established law.”
