California Governor Jerry Brown Picks Xavier Becerra for Attorney General

SACRAMENTO — California Governor Jerry Brown today named House Democratic Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra (D-Los Angeles) to replace Kamala Harris as attorney general of California. If confirmed by the California State Assembly and Senate, Becerra would become the state’s first Latino attorney general.

Following is a statement from Joel Reynolds, NRDC’s western director:

“Congressman Javier Becerra is an outstanding choice to carry on the work of Attorney General (and now Senator-elect) Kamala Harris. Given our current political climate, what happens here matters more than ever. So it’s critical that we have an advocate in place to stand up for California. Congressman Becerra will ensure enforcement and defense of our environmental, civil rights and public health laws, and  protect the quality of life for all Californians.”
