NEW YORK — As requested by governments at last year's COP29 climate negotiations, today the COP presidencies of Azerbaijan and Brazil released a roadmap outlining how the world can meet its $1.3 trillion annual climate financing goal.
Following is reaction from Joe Thwaites, senior advocate for international climate at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council):
"This offers a sober assessment. The challenges to scaling up to the $1.3 trillion goal are significant, but the roadmap presents a clear set of actions that can get us there.
"The roadmap makes clear that it is about more than just large capital needs but also smart policy that pays attention to quality of funding, investment outcomes, coordination amongst disparate funders, and addressing systemic inequities in our financial systems.
"There have been many high-level reports on climate finance that present good proposals but fall short on delivery. The roadmap puts forward an ambitious and realistic set of short-term actions that governments at COP30 should take forward to make sure that this time things will be different."
