Pope Francis passed away this morning.
Following is reaction from Yamide Dagnet, Senior Vice President, International at NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Council):
“Pope Francis advanced the public dialogue on the need for urgent action to address the existential crisis of our time. His 2015 papal encyclical, Laudato Si, On Care for Our Common Home, helped to fire the collective conscience of 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide and millions more whom he influenced.
“The Pope spoke truth to all the leaders of the world, all jurisdictions, including the U.S. Congress and the U.N. General Assembly, on our responsibility to act on the climate crisis—especially the wealthiest and biggest polluters—while empowering vulnerable people to cope with its consequences.
“Pope Francis was a man of faith, not politics. He consistently reiterated, with grace, that all of us—no matter our faith or politics—share an obligation to be responsible stewards of the earth. His memory and message live on.”
