The Trump Administration’s Assault on Energy Efficiency Standards

The U.S. Department of Energy under President Trump has proposed two significant, and damaging, changes to its energy efficiency programs: 1) to exclude common household light bulbs used in 2.7 billion U.S. sockets from the next stage of improved lighting efficiency standards scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1, 2020, and 2) to change its “Process Rule” for how it sets efficiency standards, setting up unnecessary roadblocks and letting industry decide the test procedures for evaluating whether appliances and equipment meet efficiency standards. These changes would increase our energy bills, hurt America’s economy, and harm the environment.
