WASHINGTON – World leaders met today at the United Nations in New York City for the 2019 Climate Action Summit, convened to encourage countries to make stronger commitments soon that address the growing costs and widening damages from climate change.

The following is a statement by Jake Schmidt, managing director of the International Program at the Natural Resources Defense Council:

“With climate damages and global temperatures escalating, world leaders failed to show that they fully understand the crisis and that they stand with young people around the world calling for stronger climate action right now. Their words must be followed by deeds. This dire moment demands much greater ambition in the fight to avert a full-blown climate catastrophe.”
