NRDC is guiding Pennsylvania’s transition toward a cleaner energy future and a more sustainable economy, moving the state beyond its legacy of coal and other fossil fuel production to deliver cleaner air and real economic opportunity. Indeed, with Pennsylvania being the third-largest net exporter of electricity in the nation, its power sector accounts for nearly a third of the state’s annual greenhouse gas emissions. NRDC’s work has thus focused primarily on reducing emissions from power plants while also helping the state pivot to clean energy, modernize the grid, and increase electric vehicle growth.

As residents face skyrocketing electricity bills, we're demonstrating to state officials a clear path for data center development that would better protect consumers, communities, and the power grid—including by pushing the tech industry to build their facilities as solar-ready. We’re also advocating for lasting reforms by state utility companies and rallying strong support for limiting toxic plastic production. Finally, we're working in partnership with urban leaders and labor unions on a range of initiatives that protect public health and build a more resilient Pennsylvania. These range from addressing climate resilience and food waste in vulnerable communities to restricting harmful neonicotinoid pesticides on farm fields to strengthening water infrastructure and public transit.
