Governor Newsom Vetoes Trump Defense Bill
SACRAMENTO – California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed Senate Bill 1 the California Environmental, Public Health, and Workers Defense Act of 2019 today, after the bill passed by wide margins in both the State Senate and Assembly.
Following is a statement from Annie Notthoff, Natural Resources Defense Council, Senior Western Advocacy Director:
“Governor Newsom’s head-scratching veto of SB 1 is disappointing on many levels. Citing California’s record of ‘deploying all the tools at the state’s disposal,’ Governor Newsom just refused to employ a new potentially powerful tool in SB 1. That’s mystifying. Our communities and rivers continue to be at risk from the escalating environmental assaults by the Trump administration intent on turning back the clock to the days of unchecked pollution. As the Trump administration charges ahead to further weaken water quality and endangered species protections this fall, NRDC will continue our work to ensure that the state of California picks up the slack. Californians are counting on the State to protect our resources from federal assaults and so are we. Let’s chart a new course toward equitable access to water for all, building a climate resilient future.”
