Got a resolution yet for the New Year? Well, here’s some food for thought: Do you have any idea how many chickens you ate in 2014? Well, if you’re a meat-eating American, the number was probably somewhere around 25. According to the “Meat Atlas” by Heinrich Böll Foundation and Friends of the Earth Europe, for every 10 Americans, 7.7 turkeys, 3.7 pigs, and 1.2 cattle are raised and slaughtered every year. That adds up to a whole lotta livestock (see below).
Each of those animals produced for food contributes to our collective carbon footprint (not to mention sickening amounts of water pollution). Agriculture is responsible for 15 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, and half of those are due to livestock. So consider this for 2015: less meat and fewer emissions. You might be even become healthier, too.
